Delta Shaped Swift Box | |
| The survival of swifts in our towns and cities is now under threat. These birds occupy crevices and cavities in buildings where they raise their young. When builings are renovated these breeding sites are often destroyed, and are not available at all on new buildings. Swifts are uniquely adapted to life on the wing. They are a popular sight and can be seen on mild summer evenings, screeching as they fly around towns in large numbers in pursuit of insects. |  [Fig. 1]: Example for installation inside buildings |

Examples include: Inside buildings, e.g. on sills or in roof spaces: The brackets supplied with the boxes can be used to attach them to the insides of buildings. Swifts can find their way into the boxes through existing ventilation apertures or other openings in buildings. This version can hardly be seen from outside the building. (see Fig. 1). This form of attachment has proved particularly effective in buildings of slab type construction and in insulated service rooms on top of buildings. The external dimensions of the box are designed to match the shape of the sill. Where buildings are being renovated or converted the installation of these Delta Boxes ensure the breeding of swifts in designated places. Any remaining gaps between the boxes in the ventilation aperture can be filled with a grille or mesh. Installation on the outside of buildings, e.g. or flat roofs or under overhanging eaves For example, the box can be attached on a low wall on the attic or cornice. This ensures that there is an uninterrupted horizontal space between the box and the ground (see Figs. 3, 4 and 5). Of course, as an alternative, these boxes can also be attached to an external wall. Depending on the installation it could not be possible to open the cleaning flap, but when the box is occupied by swifts this is not a problem, because in this case cleaning it is not essential. Siting: In general all kinds of buildings and structures are suitable, e.g. residential, high rise and slab construction buildings, industrial plants, churches, structures on highways, walls, as well as cliffs. Materials: SCHWEGLER wood concrete, galvanised brackets. Delivery includes screws and wall plugs. Colour, or subsequent painting: The boxes are supplied in a natural grey colour. If required they can painted using an air-permeable external wall paint. Cleaning and inspection: If needed it is very easy to gain access to the box, by simply raising the flap at the back. When occupied by swifts the box should not normally require cleaning. | ||
